|     There are few pieces of equipment in
any plant that are depended upon as much as a shear. From the
smallest job shop to the largest state-of-the-art manufacturing
facility, a reliable, precise shear is a key part of their success.
Our American made, guillotine style shear has proven itself
over the last thirty years to be that key in thousands of installations
all over the world. The Standard Industrial shear gives something
that most manufacturer's shears can't, the total satisfaction
of knowing they purchased a machine that was 100% owned, operated
and manufactured completely in the U.S.A.
The Standard shear gives you a massive
unitized frame in a single fabrication. This frame consists
of the closed end housings, upper cross members, the lower
beam, and a table that together create the strongest design
available on the market. The 80,000 P.S.I. steel capacity
is supplied by a single cylinder hydra-mechanical drive system.
This capacity is crucial to meet today's requirements. The
Standard hydraulic system is one of the most powerful on the
market with a large capacity pump and valving to give the
operators the most shearing tons available. This heavy duty
system allows you to shear a tremendous range of steel thicknesses
in a single blade gap setting. A set of large, heavy duty,
single acting hold-down cylinders supply all the support required
to keep the workpiece in place for the most precise cut. These
cylinders automatically clamp down on the workpiece prior
to the movement of the blade. Narrow material is easily sheared
by two cylinders placed side by side on the right side of
the shear.
    Standard Industrial went to great
lengths to engineer machines to be the most trouble free available
on the market today. Although powerful, the hydraulic and
electric systems are incredibly simple to keep downtime to
a minimum. All components are made from U.S. suppliers like
Square D and Vickers, and we designed them from the vendors'
stock, not specially made units just for us. Your machine
will come with a manual that lists the components original
manufacturer's name and part number. This gives you the choice
to buy replacement parts that are always available from Standard
or from your local hometown vendor's shelf.
The hydraulic system is designed for
quiet, shockless operation to eliminate the need for special
foundation requirements. The shear also comes with system
overload protection to stop damage if an operator attempts
to cut more than the machine's capacity. Another standard
feature is a 36" travel, PLC controlled "Go-To"
backgauge with multi-level programming. This backgauge is
undoubtedly the most heavy duty unit available on the market.
It is also available with a 48" travel and/or with a
power swingaway which brings the entire backgauge up and out
of the way to shear long pieces. With a long list of other
impressive options and standard features, the Standard Industrial
shear will make you proud when you say that you "bought
American.

Guillotine vs. Swing Beam
|
| Metal plate shears consist of a lower blade (or knife) in
a fixed position in the shear frame and a movable upper blade
set into the ram (or top blade carrier) of the shear. The most
crucial aspect to the success of a shear is its ability to properly
shear to its rated capacity over the lifetime of the machine.
Four factors are key to this success, (1) strength of the drive
system, (2) strength of the frame, (3) a competent guidance
(gibbing) system to bring the upper blade straight down for
the most precise cut and (4) a heavy duty, high tonnage hold
down system. Another important factor is how the blades are
held in position securely during the cut. |
| |
| Since the lower blade is fixed in the frame, the quality
of the cut is entirely dependent upon the design of the upper
(movable) blade carrier. This design is critical to the strength
of the entire system. The two methods commonly used to hold
and guide the upper blade are the guillotine system and the
swing beam system. |
| |
| The guillotine system is by far the most preferred method
used by precision manufacturers of shears. This system provides
the most accurate cutting action due to the fact that the blade
comes straight down to shear the workpiece. The travel of the
upper blade from the top of the travel to the bottom is a straight
line through the entire cut and the angle between the two blades
never changes. |
| |
| Adversely, the swing beam system travels at an arc and the
angle between the two blades changes from the beginning to the
end of the stroke. The entire upper blade carrier pivots on
two bearings (one on each end frame) in such a manner that the
angle of the top blade varies as the cut progresses. All of
the horizontal forces of shearing are transmitted to the two
bearings on the end frames. |
| |
Virtually all of the quality U.S. made shears manufactured
in this century have been of the guillotine design. The guillotine
system uses ram slides (gibbs) which guide the upper beam and
solidly contain the shearing forces. Our ram slides are located
directly above the shearing area on the front and back of the
shear ram above the shearing center line. In this design, as
used by Standard Industrial, the ram is completely contained
in the slides throughout the entire ram travel.
The swing beam design originated with lighter capacity shears
imported first from Europe and more recently from other countries.
This is most likely due to the fact that it can be designed
and made cheaply to use in the smaller capacity shears. Since
the entire front section of the upper blade is unsupported,
it is weaker than the guillotine system and more prone to deflection
and vibration during ram travel. |
| |
The drive system and blade carrier are typically
lightweight, therefore the system requires the use of an eccentric
adjustment to change the blade clearance for every workpiece
thickness.
Although both systems are widely used, the guillotine style
possesses the simple ability to keep the top and bottom blade
in alignment at all times which is required for the most precise
cut. We at Standard Industrial have been utilizing the guillotine
system for over thirty years to provide you with a quality 100%
American made shear. |

|
| |
| In addition to the model AS shear, we now offer an economical
model CS shear in ¼" x 10' and ¼" x
12' and 3/8" x 10' and 3/8" x 12' capacities. The
CS is an extremely affordable version of the model AS shear
that we have been making for over 30 years. |
| |
| The model CS shear has the same hydra-mechanical, guillotine
straight line cutting action drive system as the AS, as well
as the 5 year parts and limited labor warranty. Like the AS,
the CS also comes standard with our 36" travel, PLC controlled
backgauge with "Go-To" and multi-level programming.
The main difference between the AS and the CS is that the CS
is only available in the ¼" and 3/8" x 10'
and 12' capacities and it is only available with a limited amount
of options, whereas the AS is available in many lengths and
capacities and has a wider variety of options to choose from.
|
| |
| An advantage of the CS is that it comes standard with many
features that the AS does not come with. Like the AS, the CS
comes standard with an extremely heavy duty frame; Industrial
quality electrics; 80,000 P.S.I. steel capacity, and the same
high quality, readily available components. Unlike the AS however,
the CS also comes standard with a manual quick change blade
gap adjustment; a quantity of (2) hand slots and (2) t-slots
in the shear table; a 4' squaring arm with imbedded scale and
an impressive list of other standard features. |
| |
| The CS series shear is perfect for any customer who is looking
for a 100% U.S. Made ¼" or 3/8" x 10' shear
at a very affordable price, while not requiring a substantial
amount of customization. As with all Standard Industrial machinery,
we stand behind our model CS shears with our unmatched 5 Year
parts and limited labor warranty. |
